I'm looking for information on illegal gambling in Ocean city in the 1940's, specifically at the Ocean City Club.

Answer

The majority of the library's Local History Collection has been transfered to the Ocean City Historical Museum. They can be reached at 609-399-1801. It is possible that they have materials that could aid you in your search, or be able to provide some information about the time period you are searching for.

In our own collection, we have a reference book, "Gambling in America : an encyclopedia of history, issues, and society" by William Norman Thompson, that could have some information. It can be located in the Reference Section under the call number R 795.097 THO.

We also have several other books on gambling and organized crime, although they will not specifically deal with Ocean City, NJ.

Additionally, you can browse the On-Line Newspaper Archives of Ocean City. You can browse these archives as far back as 1893, so you could conduct a search for references to gambling during the 1940's.

Good luck with your search! Please let us know if we can provide any additional assistance.
