Gary Matthews, one of the Phillies broadcasters,is nicknamed Sarge.....how did this come about and when??

Answer

A well regarded ballplayer, Gary Matthews earned the nickname Sarge for his take-charge dugout leadership, take-charge attitude and competitive playing.

The "Sarge" nickname came from his habit, developed early in the 1984 season, of saluting the legions of LF bleacher fans who would cheer his every appearance in the outfield. In August, he arranged for caps with "sergeant stripes" and his name to be distributed to all bleacher fans.
